Special Guest Architect James Law, CEO, Cybertecture who had traveled all the way from Hong Kong, began by acknowledging his training under the esteemed Itsuko Hasegawa, a renowned Japanese architect celebrated for her unwavering commitment to resisting market pressures and populist trends, while actively engaging with local communities.

Speaking on “The Future of Architecture”, Law pointed out that in the backdrop of climate change as also the geo-political crisis architects need to be brave and reinvent the norms of the future which entails reinventing the paradigms of structure, scale, construction, urban space, and nature. The aim he added is also to ensure that the built environment not only coexists with but also enhances and heals the surrounding nature. To illustrate his point, James Law presented Cybertecture’s visionary proposal for Riyadh’s future city, designed to accommodate a population of 7 million.

This future city is decentralized, reminiscent of science fiction, and constructed around mega structures. It encompasses various aspects of work, life, and culture and is seamlessly connected through autonomous transportation. Notably, the city’s design prioritizes the reinvention of nature within its spaces, incorporating elements like forests, reservoirs, and solar farms. This innovative approach fosters a carbon-free cycle of energy, eliminating the need for burning fossil fuels or destroying rainforests.
